Earthquake in Ecuador claimed nearly 80 lives

Guayaquil, Ecuador (Reuters) - At least 77 people were killed and hundreds injured in a powerful earthquake in Ecuador, which occurred on Sunday night, and caused severe damage in the coastal towns of Latin American countries.

a magnitude of 7.8 points earthquake occurred off the Pacific coast of Ecuador and was felt in the capital, Quito, the country, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter, as well as the large market town of Guayaquil, the number of buildings which got cracked or partly collapsed.

This is the strongest earthquake in Ecuador over the past few decades, and officials have warned of a possible increase in the number of deaths, as rescuers begin to reach the most affected areas.

"It was very scary, we're all afraid, and still remain on the street, because we are afraid of aftershocks, - said the guard from Guayaquil Fernando Garcia. - All damaged".

Emergency situation declared in six provinces of Ecuador.

The country's authorities have named the strongest aftershocks since 1979, when the element has claimed 600 lives.

The earthquake did not affect the Ecuador's oil industry, entering the oil cartel OPEC, but the refinery in Esmeraldas stopped working as a precautionary measure.
